Bee Control Didsbury
Bees on your property
There are several species of bee in the UK and they will be commonly found across the Manchester, Stockport and Cheshire areas, so the chances of encountering a bee presence on your property can be higher than you think. However, it’s important to know that due to their crucial role in the pollination of flowers and crops, they are not regarded as a pest and cannot be treated as such by pest control experts.
The bees you will most often see outside of the nest or hive are the worker bees, and they are not usually aggressive unless they feel threatened or their hive is threatened. They will normally only appear alone or in pairs as bees do not normally swarm unless they are defending their hive or a queen has attracted a swarm to her in order to establish a new colony. This will usually occur between April and May when a new queen leaves an established hive or colony to set up a new colony elsewhere. The swarm will often appear on tree branches or the side of a house or other structure before moving off. We would recommend leaving such swarms in peace as they will move off by themselves, and bees are protected by several laws and legislation.
Bee hives and nests can usually be found in trees and attic spaces, or roof spaces in outbuildings. They can also sometimes build hives in tree roots or stumps, dirt banks and behind loose masonry or cavity walls. If you suspect a bee hive is present on your property, the easiest way to find out is to track a worker bee as they fly to and from the site of the hive.
Bee hive removal in Manchester, Stockport and Cheshire
Bees are not naturally aggressive and will only attack to defend themselves or their hive. Their sting can be painful and for some people with allergies can lead to anaphylactic shock which is a very serious medical condition. It’s therefore best to stay away from any hive you find on your property and to call professional pest control or beekeepers for help.
It’s important to remember though that wherever possible, bees should be left alone, as unless they are entering your property or swarming nearby, they should not cause any significant issues.
If there is a risk to health such as the hive being in a school, nursery or playgroup, or a property used by vulnerable people or those allergic to bees, or the hive is close to a frequently used doorway or window, then we will be more than happy to look at removing and relocating the bee hive.
If Honey Bees are present, removal is definitely the best option as their honeycomb nests can cause rot and other serious structural problems, as well as attract other pests who will want to feed on the honey.
Our technicians will work with local beekeeping organisations to organise the safe removal and relocation of any hives across the Manchester, Stockport and Cheshire areas, and the beekeeping organisations will be more than happy to provide additional information and even access to bee hives if you are interested in learning more about bees.
Please note that bees are not classed as pests and are legally protected – therefore extermination is never an option for dealing with a bee hive on your property.
